Museum of Emotions

Belgrade, Republic of Serbia 05/2022

It may not be your first instinct when entering a building to consider how it makes you feel, but architecture has always had a big impact on emotions. The Museum of Emotions competition tasks participants with using architecture as a tool to bring out different emotions. Participants are asked to design a museum that includes two separate halls that bring out contrasting emotions – one inducing negative emotions, and the other inducing positive emotions.

The Museum of Emotion: Anti-war_fears and hopes

Emotions may be subtle, change rapidly, and instant, such as seeing cute little animals, or delicious food, and you will feel joy, amazement, love, etc.; Emotions are relatively long-lasting, and generally brought to us by long-term experience in life. For example, a certain food reminds people of "mother's taste", which brings people a feeling of reassurance, touching, and nostalgia. "General human emotions", that is, facing the same pictures, patterns, objects or expressions, people's emotions associated with things in their minds are generally unified.

Based on the current international situation, We chose the theme of anti-war: fears and hopes. Imagine a picture that one side is the ruins of the post-war buildings, which are twisted and horrible, and on the other side is the memorial park, green grass, quiet and peaceful, such a plot with strong emotional conflict is real. The site of the museum is designed in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. although it is a  foreign city, the war still has had a great impact on every Chinese people. In 1999, NATO, led by the United States, used missiles to attack the city where the Chinese embassy was located.

The museum is a ring in the plan, but in three dimensions, the ring is inserted obliquely into the ground, like an unexploded bomb left in the ground after the war. Fortunately, it did not explode, but at the same time it is also dangerous and could explode at any time; through this form, the uncertainty of human emotion is displayed.

Emotions are often dynamic and influenced by the outside world. It is difficult to tell which moment of emotion or emotion is completely positive or completely negative, so there are often "love and hate", "cry with joy", "want to cry without tears", etc. Such complex and entangled emotional expressions. The plan of the building chooses the form of a ring, which represents the flow, circulation and mutual influence between various emotions. For the two pavilions with different moods required in the brief, in our design, there is no clear boundary between the two pavilions, and the physical space can be used as a way to distinguish: the underground part is regarded as a pavilion, and the above-ground part is regarded as a pavilion. The part is a pavilion, the above-ground part is sunny and surrounded by vegetation, and the underground part is closed and filled with icy man-made building materials; the degree of emotional change can also be used as a way of zoning the two pavilions: one part is calm, Curious, exploratory, and partly intense, terrifying, and wanting to escape.

The main entrance is located on the side of the Memorial Park. After entering the building, visit clockwise. As gradually descends, the lighting decreases, and the surrounding becomes dark. The change of light (sense of sight) creates tense feelings, that will stimulate a desire to explore, curiosity, or a little worry or fear. The next section is a inclined flat at 18°, causing dizziness and imbalance to those walking on it. As if in a boat or at sea, most people would choose to lean on the wall (sense of touch) and grope forward. Going forward, the negative emotions are little by little strengthened, and people will feel uncomfortable at this time, so a temporary safe path to the outdoors is set up here.

In the last section of the negative emotion pavilion, the ground is made of soft material. When you step on it, the feeling of deep and shallow under your feet will arouse instinctive vigilance(sense of touch and hearing) . In a very dark environment, you can only move forward by groping, and there are countless concave handprints on the wall(sense of touch), as if there are people around you who you can't see, struggling with you in darkness, struggling towards a bright future.

After returning to the ground, the negative emotional part also ends here. At that moment, the eyes have not fully adapted to the outdoor light. From dark to light will cause a strong sense of impact on your mental and physical. The positive emotion pavilion on the ground has steps that continue to rise. Each step is written with the time and casualties of human wars.

Positive emotions_ joyful, love, hope

On the highest viewing platform, you can see the ruins of war on one side, the memorial park on the other. Finally, step by step down from the top, and gradually enter the natural environment (sense of sight and smell), and the reflective glass curtain wall makes you feel that although you are in a stable and natural environment this time, still the danger of war is hidden.
